About This Item

In Talianna®, named after Sandra’s daughters, Talia and Anna, we created our first proprietary wine, capturing the unique fruit expressions of our two most important varietals and best barrel lots.

Talianna® is a blend of Cabernet sauvignon Clone 6 (88%) grown on the Georges III vineyard in the Rutherford sub-appellation of Napa Valley, along with Syrah (10%) and Petit Verdot (2%). The grapes are hand-harvested and gently crushed to retain 40% whole berries.  Prior to yeasting with Bordeaux red yeast, we cold soaked for 72 hours, increasing the richness and intensity of the fruit character. Color extraction uses a combination of manual pump overs via a screen during the initial fermentation, with gentle cap irrigation as the wine goes dry. Following fermentation the wine went through malo-lactic fermentation on the skins and in barrel. The wine was aged 19 months in 100% French oak barrels, 100% of which were new.  Unfined and unfiltered, it was laid down in bottle prior to release.

Vintage Notes
Yet another year of drought conditions began with our “rainy season” ending early, followed immediately by flowering fruit trees opening up before the end of January.  We received only about 75% of our usual rain.  Spring was long, cool, overcast and punctuated by several windy days during flowering that badly affected fruit set.  Shatter was evident in several of the vineyards we work with; by harvest, our Chardonnay crop was off by about 40% and our Syrah by 60%.  Growing season temperatures were steady and warm – perfect for developing the complex fruit flavors we look for, as well as preserving the acidity necessary for mouth-watering wine.  Harvest began in July, our earliest harvest date on record at BELL, and we were completely finished bringing in our red grapes by the first week of October, also a record.  To quote Anthony, “Young wines look to be of excellent quality with deep color and lovely fruit aromas, and initial analysis shows no serious impacts from the series of heat waves we experienced. Overall yields are down, but it is safe to say that while we will not have the expected quantity to sell in upcoming years, the quality will be exceptional.”

Tasting Notes
The blending of two family names is echoed by blending our favorite grape varietals.  The Clone 6 Cabernet dominates the nose with its white pepper spice, dried rose, green tobacco and a very ripe, juicy, red fruit core. The palate is just as sweet and spicy as the aromas.  Red fruits dominate with traditional spices such as fennel and cigar. High toned and elegant, this wine has a profound richness and multi-dimensional personality. This rich, complex wine will continue to evolve for years to come.
