2016 Bell Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 6 1.5L

 

Vineyard

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the historic BV#3, now called Georges III and located adjacent to Caymus, off the Silverado Trail in the renowned Rutherford sub-appellation of the Napa Valley. It was originally planted by Georges de Latour of Beaulieu Vineyard in 1928 and replanted by Andy Beckstoffer, commencing in 1991.  Following his work identifying the differences between various Cabernet sauvignon clones, Anthony Bell spent many hours in this vineyard, introducing Clone 6 from budwood taken off BV’s block 4, where he conducted the clonal trials in 1980. Those vines are among the oldest in the Valley, and are planted in gravelly loam soils.

 

Vinification

The grapes are hand-harvested and gently crushed to retain 40% whole berries.  Color extraction is accomplished via gentle cap irrigations. The grapes were drained and pressed at dryness. The free-run and press wines were kept separate.  Following fermentation the wine went through malo-lactic fermentation in barrel.  The wine was aged in 100% French barrels, 100% new, for 19 months and was racked several times during aging to naturally clarify the wine and soften the tannins. With no filtration or fining, the wine was laid down in bottle prior to release.

 

Vintage Notes

2016 began following four continuous years of drought.  Thankfully, over 16 combined inches of rain in January and March eased those worries and the growing season began with bud break 5-10 days early.  With a full soil moisture profile provided by continuing light rains in early spring and no major heat events, fairly even shoot growth was seen throughout the valley.  No significant frost damage occurred, boosting everyone’s hopes for a normal crop load after the dismal harvest size of 2015.  Like bud break, harvest began a little early, but it wasn’t as rushed as the previous year.  During harvest, three significant heat spikes brought temperatures briefly into the high 90s before dropping back to the normal range.  With each dehydrating heat spike, the ability to determine optimal ripeness became a puzzle.  Appearances were deceiving; great patience and continued fruit sampling were key in delivering quality grapes.  Tannins seemed supple and well-integrated very early on.  Small clusters were filled with small berries, which promise intense color and flavors.

 

Tasting Notes

Cabernet sauvignon, Clone 6, our flagship wine, is a plant brought to California in the mid 1800's, pre-phylloxera.  In the glass, a sea of crushed red velvet with a dusty nose of blackberry, red cherry, spiced peppers and tobacco. The palate enters with a great amount of zeal fervor.  Pure and focused fruits of red currants, pomegranate, and a wonderful charcuterie characteristic satisfy the earth loving wine drinker. The finish is incredibly long, more than a minute, with a display of kirsch liqueur, sweet oak spice, and licorice. An incredible powerhouse of a wine with a delicate, precise delivery.
