2015 Bell Merlot, Yountville, Napa Valley

 Vineyard

Our Merlot grapes are estate grown on the winery’s Spanos Berberian Estate Vineyard in Yountville approximately one mile south of the Yountville Hills. Yountville enjoys the early morning fog and cool growing conditions of the maritime influenced southern Napa Valley, whilst the early receding fog gives us more sunlight and warmer daytime temperatures than the more southerly Carneros region.  Our warm summer daytime temperatures and cool evenings result in grapes with rich fruit flavors and an excellent acid balance.

 

Vinification

Merlot grapes were hand-harvested and gently crushed to minimize crushing of berries and maximize fruit character.  We fermented at 85 degrees-F with a Bordeaux yeast strain, and extracted color utilizing gentle irrigation over the skins.  Following fermentation the wine underwent malo-lactic fermentation and was then racked to barrel.  The wine was barrel aged in French oak barrels (52% new) for 20 months. 

 

Vintage Notes

Yet another year of drought conditions began with our “rainy season” ending early, followed immediately by flowering fruit trees opening up before the end of January.  We received only about 75% of our usual rain.  Spring was long, cool, overcast and punctuated by several windy days during flowering that badly affected fruit set.  Shatter was evident in several of the vineyards we work with; by harvest, our Chardonnay crop was off by about 40% and our Syrah by 60%.  Growing season temperatures were steady and warm – perfect for developing the complex fruit flavors we look for, as well as preserving the acidity necessary for mouth-watering wine.  Harvest began in July, our earliest harvest date on record at BELL, and we were completely finished bringing in our red grapes by the first day of October, also a record.  To quote Anthony, “Young wines look to be of excellent quality with deep color and lovely fruit aromas, and initial analysis shows no serious impacts from the series of heat waves we experienced. Overall yields are down, but it is safe to say that while we will not have the expected quantity to sell in upcoming years, the quality will be exceptional.”

 

Tasting Notes

Deep in color, the invitingly bright, red berry aromatics on the nose are laced with rosemary, spring forest and a fine dusty black pepper.  The aromas carry through on the palate with fresh raspberry, cranberry, and wonderful subtle baking spices.  Very soft and lush on the palate with a fine grippy tannin and lively acidity to balance it out perfectly. Medium bodied to compliment a wide variety of cuisines, never to interrupt the dish, only to enhance.
