2014 Bell Cabernet Sauvignon, Clone 169

Continuing to honor Anthony’s ground-breaking early work identifying the difference between Cabernet sauvignon clones while at BV, we’ve produced this wine from clone 169 for the first time.  One of over two dozen Cabernet sauvignon clones now grown commercially, Clone 169 was first introduced in 1997 and has been gaining popularity, especially on Mt. Veeder, since its release in 2003.  It has good berry size, high vigor, a well-balanced acid to sugar ratio and creates deeply colored wines with intense complexity.

Vintage Notes
For the third year in a row, Napa Valley experienced an exceptional vintage and near drought conditions.  Though the drought continued to concern us throughout the growing season, between 11 and 17 inches of rain fell in the critical months of February and March, coming at the right time to provide the necessary water needed for a fairly smooth growing season.  The warm winter resulted in an early bud break. July’s relatively low temperatures were coupled with high humidity during the summer, heightening rot and mildew concerns.  The relatively cool summer slowed down sugar accumulation to achieve perfect ripeness at lower sugar levels. The growing season provided numerous challenges – our third consecutive drought year, the South Napa earthquake in August, and late season hail.  Our harvest started about two weeks early, the earliest since 2004, with vines yielding loose clusters of small, intensely flavored berries.  The resulting wines have deep color, rich fruit flavors and a wonderful, supple texture on the palate.

Tasting Notes

This delicious wine leads with a riveting color of deepest indigo.  A dense curtain of tears forms when swirled, and the perfume rising from the glass invites you in.  First flavors of dead-ripe black cherry and dark chocolate swirl into puff pastry and warm currant pudding. Very smooth tannins lead to a lush, soft, finish reminding me of expensive suede.  With its incredible concentration, this wine should age nicely, but it will be difficult to do that if you taste it first!
